Personal Insurance

Personal Umbrella Insurance

Additional liability limits over qualifying home, auto, and other personal policies.

What is personal umbrella insurance?

A personal umbrella policy provides an additional layer of liability protection above specified underlying policies, commonly home and auto. It can help when a covered judgment, settlement, or defense expense exceeds the underlying policy's available limit.

An umbrella is not a substitute for adequate primary insurance. It usually requires minimum underlying limits and may need every eligible residence, vehicle, watercraft, and driver disclosed and properly insured.

How umbrella coverage works

Depending on its wording, an umbrella may provide:

Excess limits

Additional limits after a covered underlying policy has paid its applicable limit.

Broader liability protection

Some policies cover specified personal-injury or liability claims not covered by an underlying policy, often subject to a self-insured retention.

Defense

May provide legal defense for covered claims according to policy terms and whether defense costs are inside or outside the limit.

Worldwide territory

Some personal umbrellas extend to eligible incidents outside the United States, but territorial and lawsuit provisions vary.

Common limitations and gaps

  • Intentional acts, business activities, professional services, and many contractual obligations are generally excluded
  • Damage to the insured's own property is not the purpose of an umbrella
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may be unavailable or optional
  • A gap can arise if required underlying insurance is not maintained
  • Certain vehicles, watercraft, rentals, or youthful operators can affect eligibility

What affects your coverage needs

  • Assets, income, and future earnings
  • Household drivers and youthful operators
  • Homes, rentals, vehicles, watercraft, and recreational vehicles
  • Pets, pools, hosting, volunteering, and travel
  • Board service, rental property, or side-business exposures

What to compare between policies

  • Underlying-limit requirements
  • Which people, properties, and vehicles are scheduled
  • Defense-cost treatment
  • Personal-injury and uninsured-motorist coverage
  • Exclusions for business, rental, or volunteer activities

A practical next step

Gather your current declarations, a list of the people and property that need to be insured, and any questions about limits or exclusions. Those details make it easier to compare policies on coverage as well as price.

Coverage availability, terms, limits, and eligibility vary by insurer and state. Coverage can be confirmed only by the issued policy and applicable endorsements.
